So a couple of days ago I have discovered a game. Not just any game; Just Cause 2. This game is amazing. The grappling hook is fantastic, the infinite parachutes are phenomenal, and the vehicles are spectacular! I've never played a game with so much freedom! Grand Theft Auto, in my experience, only gives the illusion of freedom; it gives very linear mission progression and only allows players to go to other parts of the city once a certain number of missions is complete. Just Cause 2 takes this idea and makes it better. In just cause 2, story progression is completely player-driven. Littered throughout your in-game map are dots that represent places you need to attack, such as oil rigs, villages, military bases, you name it. A wonderful mechanic in this game is the Chaos system. As you create chaos, meters tick away on your screen, showing you when the next story mission, mercenary mission, and other such things are available, and how much chaos you will need to unlock them.
This game is one of the only games in my memory that gives the player complete and total free roam. Another game that tries this (and failed miserably) was Far Cry 2. It had a similar concept but was seriously flawed: it simply wasn't open. it was very linearly played, one mission at a time, and forced the player to travel to one point on the map at a time. This makes Just Cause 2 one of the greatest Free-Roam, sandbox games I have ever played. The steam sale I got it in is unfortunately over, but you can still get it from your favorite game retailer, pc gaming service, etc. Again, please comment what you think, and like always... get Randominated!
